For the first time in the Baltic States, interventional cardiologist Andrius Berukštis and interventional radiologist Rokas Girčius performed the implantation of an individual stentgraft of the aortic archagogue at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinika, the interventional radiology department of the Center for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine of Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinika. Until recently, the expansion or rupture of the aortic arch was treated only surgically, performing a very complex and long operation that traumatizes the patient.
Doctors performed this procedure using an individual, custom-made relay custom aortic arch stentgraft made by Terum Aortic company. Treatment of the aortic arc aneurysm with a coated stentgraft takes place under the influence of general anesthesia under the control of an X-ray. The stentgraft (a metal frame covered with synthetic tissue – graft) is made individually according to the patient’s anatomy with holes into which additional stents for the arteries of the head are inserted.
Doctors prepared for the procedure very carefully, choosing various additional measures to prevent or reduce possible complications. This procedure, both during it and in the postoperative period, is much less risky than when performing open surgery on the heart and aorta, but also quite complicated, since the intervention is done in the area of the aortic arch – multi-stage manipulations are carried out in a very important place of blood circulation, from which blood enters the head, arms and below – the abdominal region and legs with large blood vessels, therefore, this type of procedure is considered to be implantations of the highest level.
