A new stage of treatment for children in the Baltic States

We are pleased to contribute to a significant medical breakthrough in the Baltic States. At Tallinn Children’s Hospital, three children were successfully treated with bleomycin electrosclerotherapy (BEST), and this hospital became the first in the region to introduce this innovative treatment method for children.

The procedures were performed by interventional radiologist Dr. Vladislav Malikov together with a team of surgeons led by Dr. Alexandra Shilova. This achievement marks an important step in the treatment of vascular malformations, including some arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), with a minimally invasive and advanced technological solution.

Electrosclerotherapy (BEST) combines the effects of a sclerosing drug with electroporation technology, which allows to increase the absorption of the drug in directly damaged tissues. In this way, the treatment becomes more targeted, effective and gentle for the little patients.

Compared to more aggressive surgical interventions, this method:

  • reduces tissue trauma,
  • shortens healing time,
  • allows the use of lower doses of drugs,
  • provides an opportunity to repeat the treatment according to an individual long-term plan.

For children and their families, this means less burden of treatment and more safety.

This interdisciplinary collaboration reflects our commitment to developing safer, more effective and patient-centered treatment options for children with complex vascular diseases in the Baltic region.

This is another step in strengthening the positioning of innovation in the region and expanding the availability of advanced therapeutic solutions.

At Klaipėda University Hospital, a 70-year-old liver cancer patient who could not undergo surgery was given a minimally invasive treatment method – microwave ablation. During the procedure, the tumor is destroyed by precise exposure to heat, without damaging the surrounding tissues, and the patient’s recovery is faster and easier than after open surgery.
